Ballet
I love watching dancing and dancers…..but I am awkward and uncomfortable in expressing my own personal rhythm (if it even exists!).
But ballet has fascinated me since I was a young girl … something about the grace and finesse of the movements — not to mention those fluffy pink tutus. I used to check out books about ballet and try to imitate what I saw illustrated in the photos. For a while I would even practice daily stretching exercises to preserve my flexibility. Too bad I didn’t stick with that daily stretching routine….it would have come in handy. *SIGH*
I wasn’t able to take dance classes as a child and soon forgot about the possibility of participating in this art form. Instead I turned to other pursuits (like figure skating). Well last year I graduated from college. It felt so good to have so much free time (aside from work) and I decided it was time to try something new. Plus I was inspired by an aunt who had taken up dance for the first time in her late twenties/early thirties.
So that is how I ended up in Roberta Rothstein’s beginner ballet class. I have to admit the first couple of months were really rough. There were even a few times I wanted to cry. I know, kinda childish right? But I’d like to see you curve your foot into an arc when for the first 25 years of life it has only held a somewhat flat position. Very frustrating.
But hard work does pay off, and so does consistency. I participated in my first ballet recital in June 2008. Very simple routine, but I am quite proud of myself all the same.
